Update on California Climate Legislation – Assembly Bills 398 and 617

Please call or write your State Senators and Assembly members to thank them for extending California’s Cap and Trade legislation through 2030. The original climate law (AB32) was due to expire in 2020.

There were significant disagreements among environmental organizations over AB398, which passed on July 17. Much of the opposition was related to concerns about the heavy involvement of the oil industry in crafting parts of the bill, the closed-door negotiations, the short timeframe for public review, and loss of local control by agencies like the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

While AB398has flaws, its passage this week maintains California’s leadership role in climate policy. The legislature also passed AB617, which will improve air pollution protections in local communities. Please thank Governor Brown and our California legislators.
