The Green Team Program

Small groups of Bay Area neighbors and co-workers learn to live more earth-friendly lifestyles through the support of a Green Action Guide, web resource listings and a trained coach. Participants reduce their solid waste, home chemicals, energy, water and auto fuel consumption.. while having fun, building community, and saving money!

The program brings together teams of 6-8 individuals in neighborhoods to learn home conservation methods and put this education into practice. Green Teams have also been very successful in the workplace working with High School students and religious groups.

How it works

Using an information-packed guidebook written for the Bay Area, participants choose between suggested actions in each of five topic areas: solid waste, chemicals, energy, transportation and water. With the help of a trained coach, participants:

  • Commit to a series of 6 meetings with 5-8 other people.
  • Choose from the suggested actions in the topic area.
  • Use the book to implement these changes with help from team members.
  • Share results and discoveries at the next meeting.
  • Lead one meeting with the help of their coach.
  • After the last meeting, receive individual and team statistics showing financial and resource savings.
  • Invite friends, family and neighbors to form a new GreenTeam.

A $25 program fee per participating household covers the guidebook, and program coach. A reduced fee of $15 and full scholarship are available as needed.

Who we are

Acterra is proud to promote the Green Team Project in the peninsula and south bay areas. The Green Team Project is a non-profit project of The Tides Center. The programs works with a growing number of volunteers and neighborhood groups to recruit members and support current teams. We wish to expand our outreach. Please, call if our program would be of interest to you. See our contact information below.

Green Team Project Mission

The project mission is to educate and support citizens in taking action to live more earth-friendly lifestyles. We help individuals reduce their consumption and discover how living with less waste is cheaper and simpler! The potential for social change is great as neighbors convert to sustainable practices and collectively ask their retailers to stock earth-friendly products.

Collaboration

The program supports increased activity by a range of municipal and non-profit organizations in the Bay Area working to promote sustainable planning and lifestyle practices. Green Team Project collaborates and/or distributes materials from the following organizations: City and County of San Francisco's Recycling, Hazardous Waste and Water Conservation programs, SLUG, Alameda County Waste Management Authority, the Cities of Berkeley and Oakland, RIDES for Bay Area Commuters, Bay Area Air Quality Management District/Spare the Air, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, The Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture, Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), Planet Drum Foundation, Science Interchange, many neighborhood associations, and others.
