What's a Green@Home HouseCall?

A three-person team of trained volunteers will come to your home for a scheduled two-hour visit, at a time that's mutually convenient. During the visit, the Green@Home team will offer you the following energy-saving upgrades:

  • Provide and install a programmable thermostat*
  • Choose a place for three compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Optimize water heater and refrigerator temperatures
  • Install flow restrictors in faucets and showerheads
  • Show you how to measure pressure and inflate car tires

In addition, the team will go over a comprehensive checklist of additional steps you might take, ranging from no-cost ideas like vacuuming your refrigerator coils to low-cost options like weather-stripping or more significant investments in energy efficiency such as double-paned windows. Together, you and the team will create a customized conservation plan to meet your household's budget and needs.

If you agree, the Green@Home team will also review your utility bill with you, comparing your usage with others and suggesting what to look for in the future. You'll also receive information about how to sign up for PaloAltoGreen , the City of Palo Alto Utilities renewable energy purchase program.

*The Green@Home services and equipment are FREE, but donations are welcome (in the range of $25 − 50) to offset the cost of the programmable thermostat.

This service is offered to everyone, regardless of ability to pay, and Acterra is looking for donations to cover the costs for everyone. Please contact Alexi Miller at alexim*acterra.org to make a contribution to underwrite the expense of providing programmable thermostats.
