EV and NGV Rentals Offered at Sacramento Airport
10/19/95, Sacramento - Electric and natural gas vehicles are. being
offered for rent by National Car Rental at the Sacramento Municipal
Airport in a joint effort by American Honda Motor Car Co., Inc., the
State of California and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District
(SMUD), according to PR Newswire. The program gives selected state
employees the opportunity to drive two EVs and two Prototype Civic
NGVs in the year long rental car test. 8% of airport rental car use
is by state workers, typically to downtown or locations that are well
within EV ranges.
Electric Station Cars Roll In Northern California
10/25/95, Berkeley, Calif. - Quick, quiet, and clean electric "Station
cars" now running in Northern California are connecting Bay Area Rapid
Transit (BART) riders using the Ashby station with a nearby software
company, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The pilot CALSTART
program will use 40 zero-polluting CITI electric cars supplied by
PIVCO, a Norwegian consortium, to encourage drivers to use rail
transit by making it more convenient to travel from home to rail
stations, or from stations to work. The two-passenger cars will
eventually be built in California and be targeted to sell to the
consumer for under $10,000.
New California Law Promotes Electric Bicycle Use
10/26/95, Sacramento, Calif. - A new law meant to encourage the use
of low-polluting electric bicycles (EBs) was recently passed by the
state of California, reports EV Online Today. The law, effective Jan.
1, 1996, extends the definition of a bicycle to include those fitted
with small electric motors for assisting the rider. Riders will not
need a driver's license or have to take a motorcycle test, but will
be required to wear a bicycle helmet.
