WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a statement
issued yesterday by California Air Resources Board Chairman, John
Dunlap, confidential information provided to him by individual vehicle
manufacturers indicates that several car companies are now ready to
offer electric vehicles as early as 1996 and 1997, and that
collectively the industry will have the capacity to produce up to
14,000 ZEVs for sale beginning in 1998.
"This shows that despite what the automakers are saying in open
forums, behind closed doors they are willing to admit that they are
EV ready," according to Rick Tempchin, Director of Electric
Transportation at the Edison Electric Institute. "This is a
tremendous breakthrough, it shows they are willing and able to produce
vehicles that will satisfy customers and we will be interested to see
if they will now put an end to their anti-EV campaign in California,"
said Tempchin.
In California, under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, the
state is required to develop a plan to reduce ozone forming emissions.
The state has included as part of their plan the inclusion of a mandate
for automakers that 2% of their car sales in the state be electric
vehicles. Ever since that decision, the auto and oil industries have
lobbied hard to remove the mandate. The California Air Resources
Board, overseeing the implementation of the mandate, suggested a
review of the sales quota earlier this year, intensifying efforts to
kill electric vehicles in the state.
"This clearly shows that electric vehicles are a viable option
and we hope to continue to hear positive news from the auto industry.
This comes on the heels of continued advancements in electric vehicle
batteries, the latest of which was announced at the Oct. 21 Tokyo Auto
Show," Tempchin said.
