Plant and Paddle Bair Island with Save The Bay
City: Redwood City
Description:  Enjoy a day of canoeing and restoration at Bair Island—a former salt pond off-limits to the public and accessible by boat. Volunteers will plant native species like common aster and white yarrow species to revitalize critical San Francisco Bay wetlands. Please bring your own lunch to enjoy out on the water.

Minimum age is 10 for canoe paddles; please call for exceptions. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. All boating equipment and instruction is provided. Each event is led by Save The Bay staff trained in CPR and Wilderness First Aid and all sites have been scouted for a safe journey.

Hope for a Green Future

Description:  The California Native Garden Foundation (CNGF) celebrates the stunning beauty and delicious diversity of California’s native plant ecology, at “Hope for a Green Future,” a two-day party, fund-raiser, and open house. Rain or shine!

Hope for a Green Future features lectures by local luminaries on restoring the local ecology by planting native gardens, tours of neighborhood native gardens with unusual native plant species, a special native plant sale with discounts for CNGF members, California native edibles tasting, scavenger hunt, and live music from Sparrow.

CNGF is a non-profit educational, research, and resource organization that promotes gardening with California native plants.

School Garden Basics Class

Description:  Be inspired by the founders of the Woodside School Garden who will share a slide show story of how the garden started. Learn ways to get the children excited and participating in all aspects of a school garden, even composting. Learn to know, love and guide kids in seasonal plantings, organic plant care, soil preparation, planting seeds and seedlings. Organizing harvest festivals and sharing ideas with the community will be discussed. Family Bird Walk

Description:  Let family walks become a shared time of nature learning. We'll begin by helping kids create personal bird-watching field guides, and then head out to the trails to find those birds. Learn about the salt marsh habitat along the way. A limited number of binoculars are available to borrow. Recommended for children ages 5 to 10. Reservations are required.

Kite Photography Demonstration
City: Alviso
Description:  Using aerial kite photography, photographer Cris Benton has been keeping an incredible visual record of the South Bay salt ponds and wetlands. Please join us for this wonderful opportunity to see his fascinating images and to learn more about how they are made. In the first hour, Cris will introduce us to his current work and what it reveals to us about the landscape we live in. In the second, we’ll move outdoors for a kite photography demonstration.
