2007 Winner Sun Light and Power
Category: Susanne Wilson Award for Pollution Prevention/Resource Conversation - Small Company

Since its inception in 1976, Sun Light and Power has installed
over 500 photovoltaic and solar thermal systems in the greater
San Francisco Bay Area. Determined to market a green product
only if they could operate green, Sun Light and Power became
the first solar company to obtain Alameda County Green
Business Program certification by enacting the following
pollution prevention practices:
Generates electricity with its own 6.6 kilowatt photovoltaic system
Utilizes a solar hot water system
Operates its trucks on bio-diesel
Heats its offices with a bio-diesel fueled radiant system
Uses skylights and compact fluorescent bulbs
Recycles paper, cardboard, cans, bottles, and building materials
Utilizes used office furniture and accessories whenever possible
Patronizes green printers and sustainable apparel suppliers to purchase less toxic and organic products
Sun Light and Power has established a company culture which
encourages all of its employees to adapt the principles of
sustainability into their daily work life. Sun Light and Power's
management and staff have provided leadership in the community
by teaching classes on renewable energy, sponsoring solar home
tours, working with non-profits to help low-income families obtain
PV systems, encouraging customers to use green lenders, and
working with trade associations to promote solar power.
