In September 2006 Farella Braun + Martel LLP became the first Green Business certified law firm in San Francisco. To obtain certification, they enacted a comprehensive set of green policies and practices designed to address recycling and waste reduction, water conservation, and pollution prevention. They were the second law firm in all of California to register with the California Climate Registry.

Elements of their program include composting and recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing, partnering with local non-profits and organizations for reuse of unneeded computers, supplies and furniture, alternative transportation incentives for employees, energy and water conservation, and quantification of their greenhouse gas emissions.

All staff members receive ongoing training in the firm's green business goals and have become active participants and proponents of the firm's commitment to sustainability. The firm maintains an internal green business website where staff can obtain and exchange information on how they can adopt sustainable behavior both at the office and in their personal life. The firm has taken on a leadership role within their industry by actively encouraging their vendors and business colleagues to join the growing corporate green movement.
