The City of Santa Clara’s municipal electric utility, Silicon Valley Power, is fully funding the installation of photovoltaic solar electric systems on the roofs of three single-family
Habitat for Humanity homes.
Construction on the three homes began in October of 2003 and involves a commitment of all City departments and many community groups. When complete, the homes will serve as a community-wide example of
resource and energy efficiency. Since the residents of these homes will have incomes less than 50% of the county median they will benefit greatly from their electric bills being reduced to about one-third
the regular amount.
The project will also demonstrate renewable energy generation, something usually enjoyed only by affluent homeowners, to lowerincome customers. Construction on the three homes began in October of 2003.
Silicon Valley Power has an established commitment to renewable power and supplies its customers with an energy mix including 26% renewable energy, twice that of the state system wide average.
